A THAI national was reported to have been devoured by a crocodile while fishing at Jalan Mulaut Kilanas early yesterday morning.

According to a police statement issued yesterday, at 7.17 am, they received a complaint stating that the man in question was eaten by a crocodile while he was fishing with his friends at Sungai Damuan, Simpang 41, Ban 6, Jalan Mulaut Kilanas.

The complaint was said to be issued by one of the victim's friends.

The police have started a joint search operation with the Marine Police and the Police Reserve . As a security measure, the area has been put under police control by members of the Central Police Station, BSB.

The incident involving a crocodile would not be the first in the country.

From a previous report in 2009, a crocodile was feared to have claimed the life of a four-year-old boy in Tutong while he was swimming with his father and two siblings.

Also in 2009, a man was attacked by a crocodile in the Belait district, while he was fishing with his wife on the river bank of Belait River in Kg Mumong.

DSP Hj Othman Hj Ahmad, Regional Crime Officer of the Brunei-Muara Police, has issued an advisory for people to stay away from the river area and other areas known to have crocodiles present for their own safety.

The police also issued a reminder for people to call 993, or the closest police station in the event of an emergency.
